composition for pile 1

60 minute audio work on location, portable stereo

in this minimal sound piece, a series of audible clicks gradually becomes more frequent over an hour period at the former site of chicago’s pile 1.

the sound recalls a similar ticking of neutron counters from the nuclear reaction which took place in 1942, as well as the tones of tennis currently played there.

the innocuous location somehow fits the event, an ambiguous step forward toasted with champagne while being denounced by those who ran it as a ‘black day’.

the piece will run in-situ via a stereo on the court at the same time the original experiment ran, from 2:25 to 3:25 pm.
